The Trap of Over-Upgrading in Defence Games

The Trap of Over-Upgrading in Defence Games

September 30, 2026 · Markus Vähäkylä

Early in any tower defence game, dumping resources into one strong tower feels great. The numbers go up, enemies melt, and you feel clever. Then a second lane opens and you have nothing to cover it.

Coverage almost always beats raw power in the mid-game. A spread of cheap units that touches every path buys you information and flexibility, which is worth more than a single wall of damage that enemies can simply route around.

I think of it as paying for options. Every early upgrade is money I cannot spend reacting to a surprise, so I hold back until the map has shown me where it hurts. Then I commit, and the commitment actually lands where it matters.

There is a real moment in most games where over-upgrading stops being a risk and becomes the right call, usually the final few waves when no new threats appear. Knowing that moment is half the skill.

If you find yourself losing maps you feel you should win, check whether you spent too much too early. Nine times out of ten, that is the culprit.
